I’m sure most of you can relate to being so busy you feel like you don’t have time for yourself. Being a full time college student and working 30 hours most weeks on top of that I’m familiar with the constant struggle for “me” time or sometimes just time, in general, for anything. “Me” time is important for anyone to stay sane but specifically for artist. I usually feel like I’m continuously on the go and it gets tiring.
When I think of “me” time I think of doing something relaxing and something that will make you happy. I think a lot of artists thinks of “me” time to mean “make art” time. At least I know I do. Which sometimes is great and super productive but other times can be detrimental to the artwork. It’s not a bad idea to take a step back from the work sometimes and come back to it once you’ve cleared your head a bit. This is a great way to get a new perspective, or take, on what you are trying to accomplish. Taking a moment away from something like that may give you that edge that you may have been needing to really push the limits. This may be accomplished by some other form of “me” time to get your mind off whatever it is you are working on.
Honestly, how is anyone supposed to focus on new works or finishing up old works with one thing piling on top of another. Sometimes you just need a break from everything. Recently, it’s been even harder to find that time for myself. With a super jam packed busy schedule I think the best way to handle that, is to stay organized and try to designate time for everything you have going on in your life so you aren’t getting overwhelmed. Take “me” days. Don’t have time for a whole day? Maybe, just a simple “me” lunch will do. Something to make sure you don’t forget about yourself and the thing you enjoy. You have to put yourself first sometimes and know that it’s okay. This is something I struggle with this all the time, I never want to say no to people, which usually leads to me over extending myself and stressing about the things I have going on in my own life. I’ve begun trying to make a conscious effort to change this and also realizing that I can ask for help from the people around me too. It might take some time to get completely comfortable with this concept.
However, CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.
